Indiana Driver License Classes
In the state of Indiana, you cannot drive without a driver’s license. And for each license type, there’s a corresponding type of instruction permit.
Operator License
In short, with this license, you are allowed to operate common motor vehicles on public roads, streets, highways, or property.
Commercial Driver License
To clarify, it allows you to operate commercial motor vehicles or combinations of vehicles with gross vehicle weight ratings in excess of 26,000 pounds; vehicles designed to transport 16 or more people, including the driver; and vehicles used to transport hazardous materials.
Class L-Motorcycle Endorsement
With this license, you can ride a motorcycle. Or, it can be added to your valid driver’s license if you are at least 16 years old.
Indiana driver license requirements
To obtain a driver’s license depending on your age, you will need to submit several required documents, get a learner’s permit and then pass a driving test.
There are three types of licenses you are able to apply for:
- Instruction permit or Learner’s license. If you are 15 you can apply for this license.
- Probationary license. If you are from 16 to 21 years, and you’re a learner’s license holder, this may be your second stage.
- Regular (Adult) Driver’s license. If you are from 18 to 21 you may apply for this license. But, firstly, you should obtain a learner’s license.
Instruction permit
In the state of Indiana, everyone who is going to apply for a driver’s license should obtain an instruction permit or learner’s license for at least 6 months.
And, it is the first stage of Indiana’s Graduated Driver’s Licensing program. If you are 15 you are able to apply for the learner’s permit and drive a car under the supervision of a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old.
How to apply
- Apply in person at any BMV branch office. Visit the office with one of your parents, and submit the application. It should be signed by your parent too
- If you are 15 you should submit the proof of driver education course enrollment. But if you are already 16, you should submit a valid Certificate of Driver Education
- Pass a vision test
- Pass a knowledge test
- Take a photo of yourself and pay $9 for your license
You will receive your permit within 14 days.

Probationary Driver License
The probationary driver’s license, which is also called a restricted license, is the second stage of Indiana’s Graduated Driver’s Licensing program. With this license, you may drive unsupervised. But for the first 6 months between 10 P.M. and 5 A.M., if there is no one with you, you can drive alone. Otherwise, a 21 years old licensed driver should be with you in your front seat.
How to apply
- Hold an instruction permit for at least 6 months
- Complete an approved driver education program
- Visit any BMV branch office and apply in person. Visit with your parent as the signature is a must
- Submit at least 50 hours of supervised driving into your Log of Supervised Driving Practice
- Pass a vision test
- Pass a driving skills exam
- Take a photo of yourself and pay $ 17.5 for your license
You will receive the Indiana probationary driver’s license within 14 days.

Indiana driver license renewal
To renew your Indiana driver’s license online or by mail you should meet several conditions. So, you should renew your license in person.

- Pass the renewal fee. If you are from 21 to 74 you should pay $17.5 for a six-year license. From 45 to 84 you will need to pay $11 and extend your license validity for 3 years. If you are already 85 you should pay $7 for a two-year license.
